Performance Opportunities
LDT’s pre-professional ballet students have several opportunities to exhibit their talents. In December, the school presents The Nutcracker. In the spring, LDT premieres A Midsummer Night’s Dream as our Spring Gala performance. The Spring Gala performance is a rare opportunity for our students and our community alike. Prior to the 2011 premiere of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the Spring Gala performance contained a cycle of ballets composed by Brian St. John and choreographed by Kristin Kingsley, Artistic Director of LDT. The six original ballets that comprised the Spring Gala cycle were (in order of premiere date): Cain: A Mystery, Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland, Hansel and Gretel, Suite de Ballet (a comedy), Pinocchio, and Scenes de Ballet. Periodically, LDT performs family concerts for the Longmont community. In the past, Through the Looking Glass, a one-act ballet choreographed by Kristin Kingsley and composed by Brian St. John, was performed with narration. The other two Family Concert ballets that have been performed for Longmont audiences are Peter and the Wolf and Carnival of the Animals. Students perform in auditioned roles providing another facet of education to the students of LDT.
The Children’s Division has two performance opportunities. The Holiday Recital is performed in December and the Annual Recital is performed in May. The Recital is a great way to see the achievement of our students. The culmination of class work with a performance is the epitome of dance education and we, at LDT, are proud to offer this opportunity to our youngest students twice a year.
The Open Student and Adult/Teen Divisions have one performance opportunity per year. The Annual Recital in May allows students in various other dance forms to perform in a theatre with full lights and costumes. This experience is very valuable to the education of students of all dance art forms.
