Class Descriptions
Ballet is a classical dance form characterized by grace and precision of movement and by elaborate formal gestures, steps, and poses. Ballet students understand that the practice of ballet can help you gain more strength, greater flexibility, better body alignment, confidence in movement, comfort through stress reduction, and infinite grace – for life.
Ballet 1
Students who are age six or older on or before the 15th of the first full month of a semester are accepted into Ballet 1 and are a part of the LDT’s Ballet Division. (Age is not the only pre-requisite for class placement. LDT places all new students through the evaluation of technical ability and strength.) The focus in Ballet Level 1 is on posture and the fundamentals of ballet training. The emphasis in the beginning level of study is on body alignment and the understanding of basic ballet terminology. The love of ballet is fostered through strong technique and story-telling, which creates a healthy and energetic atmosphere where LDT ballet students thrive.
Students enrolled in Ballet 1 have many opportunities to perform. The Ballet Annual Recital is the non-auditioned performance and will rehearse inside class time. Students may also audition for The Nutcracker and Spring Gala performances, accompanied by LDT’s Chamber Orchestra. These performances will have outside audition and rehearsals times and is not included in the tuition costs of LDT. These shows have a very high expectation in the Longmont community and LDT is proud to offer these long-lasting memory making professional performance experiences to our students.
Ballet 2

Combo Classes
In the Longmont Dance Theatre Ballet and Tap combination class program, children who are 3 to 5 years of age experience the joy and physical benefits of dance classes. Imagination and story-telling through dance is emphasized using guided, creative, age-appropriate activities. Activities to develop coordination, body awareness, and ballet and tap syllabi are part of each class. Children participating in Combo classes are a part of the Children’s Division. The Children’s Division has two opportunities for performances. The Holiday Recital, December, and Annual Recital, May, are exciting times for these students and performances create poise and self-esteem for LDT’s youngest students. Children must be 3 years of age by the start of each session and be fully toilet trained. A registration form must be on file per student.
Adult Beg/Int Ballet

LDT is very proud of our excellent Adult Open Division and encourage all students to try many different dance styles. Whether a novice or an experienced dancer, students will find a class level to suit their needs. Placement in the Adult/Teen Open Division classes is based on the interest of the student and requires no placement class. Students enrolled in the Adult/Teen Ballet classes will learn the fundamentals of ballet. These classes are geared for the adult student. Artistry with sound technique is the basis for this specific ballet class.
Boys Dance
Young male ballet students ages 8-18 can continue their ballet training in a male only environment in this Boys ballet class. These young men are a part of the LDT’s Ballet Division. These students are only required to take one class a week but many take supplemental ballet classes to continue their movement knowledge, especially as their training progresses. Male dancers must have a command of the ballet vocabulary while building strength that is asked of these dancers. Jumps, turns, and general technique are the focus in this class. Musicality, retention of choreography, and advancement in the LDT syllabus of ballet training is emphasized. Students enrolled in Boys Dance have many opportunities to perform. The Ballet Annual Recital is the non-auditioned performance and will rehearse inside class time. Tap 5/6/7
Tap focuses on rhythms and intricate footwork, creating a percussion instrument out of the dancer’s feet and is a very American style of theatrical dance. At LDT, students can learn the basic steps of tap dance and then progress to an advanced level. Students can also become skilled at the Broadway style and rhythmic style tap.
This Open Student Division class is geared for 13-18 year olds and will rehearse in class for the end of the semester Annual Recital. Classes emphasize sound technique which culminates in more rapid movement and complex footwork.
Tap/Jazz 1/2/3
Jazz dance is frequently influenced by other dance styles such as acro, ballet, contemporary, and hip-hop. In turn, many other dance styles are influenced by jazz dance. As in most forms of dance, technique is the foundation for all modern jazz dance movement. In particular, jazz dancers benefit from a sound working knowledge of ballet technique and, consequently, jazz dance curriculum commonly includes ballet training. Dancers who have mastered jazz dance technique are free to focus on the stylistic and performance aspects of dance.
Tap focuses on rhythms and intricate footwork, creating a percussion instrument out of the dancer’s feet and is a very American style of theatrical dance. At LDT, students can learn the basic steps of tap dance and then progress to an advanced level. Students can also become skilled at the Broadway style and rhythmic style tap.
This Open Student Division class is geared for students who want to begin or continue tap and jazz technique. Classes introduce jazz vocabulary and movement skills while building a foundation for future progression in the study of jazz. Classes introduce tap fundamentals and rhythmic skills. This class will rehearse in class for the end of the semester Annual Recital.
Adult Tap
LDT is very proud of our excellent Open Adult/Teen Division and encourage all students to try many different dance styles. Whether a novice or an experienced dancer, students will find a class level to suit their needs. Placement in the Open Adult/Teen Division classes is based on the interest of the student and requires no placement class.
At LDT, students in this Open Adult/Teen Division class can learn the basic steps of tap dance and then progress to an advanced level, while finding the artistry and health benefits of movement. Students can also become skilled at the Broadway style and rhythmic style tap. Performance opportunities do exist for all ages.
Musical Theatre 4 – 6
This Student Open Division class is an introduction to the Musical Theatre genre for students in Levels 4-6. This class will provide young students the opportunity to explore acting exercises, simple movement for musical theater based in jazz and ballet techniques, and an introduction to singing. Students will learn songs and movement from current and classic musicals in preparation for the Annual Recital where they will perform with live accompaniment.
Modern
Modern Dance is one of the important kinds of theatrical dance, developed in the early twentieth century by choreographers such as Vaslav Nijinsky, Isadora Duncan, and Martha Graham, and led by the Paris-based ballet company Ballet Russes. It is a movement based on a rebellion against steps and positions and values expressive and original or authentic movement. This class is a quick-paced, advanced class, focusing on utilization on the dancer’s skills as a whole (strength, technique, body awareness, creative voice, performance, risk-taking ability). Students continue to perfect strength, balance, and awareness, as they are challenged with a variety of concepts (multi-spirals through the body, fall/recovery, release/recovery, juxtaposing movement qualities, multi-dimensional use of space). Students can expect each class to include a modern adagio, allegro and combination of movement. Students will regularly move into and out of the floor, move through inversions, and experience a variety of complex spacial patterns. This Open Student Division class is designed to both challenge and satiate dancers in a fun and supportive environment and is based on Limon and Release Techniques.
Hip Hop
At Longmont Dance Theatre, Hip Hop is taught through a disciplined syllabus and includes a wide range of styles notably, breaking, locking, and popping. Students enrolled in this Open Student Division class will build on the fundamentals of Hip Hop technique. Coordination through the whole body while learning more complex steps is the emphasis of this class.
Flamenco
Flamenco is Spain’s national dance form. The dancer beats his or her heels from a gentle whisper to a frenzy while clapping to define the rhythm or curving arms to create elegant patterns in the air. Sometimes a dancer may use castanets to emphasize the beat. The dancer’s movements are enhanced by a swirling dress for the female and figure-hugging trousers and snug jacket for the male. Students enrolled in the Flamenco Teen class will learn the fundamentals of flamenco technique. Students will also learn more complex dances from the great tradition of Flamenco dancing. Posture, arm work and foot work will be emphasized in this Student Open Division class.
Choreo Comp
This Open Student Division class is designed to foster and cultivate the young choreographer. Class will utilize the elements of dance (space, shape, time, energy) to give students a framework for choreography, provide choreographic tools for students, and give students an understanding of structures and forms from which to choose. Students can expect to choreograph studies and dances of various lengths, receive support and feedback from peers, as well as learn how to view and talk about the dance of other’s as well as their own. (Students may only register for this class if they are also registered in Ballet and Modern.)
